Tooth Fillings | Winter Garden FL

Dental Fillings

We are a mercury-free practice. However, many people still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver/mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and tooth-colored restorations (onlays) create fillings that are not only beautiful (or unnoticeable) but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong thanks to new bonding technologies.

Disadvantages of Silver fillings:

Silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak or break. This results in the tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands, contracts, and can split.

Silver fillings contain 50 percent mercury. They can corrode, leak and cause stains on your teeth and gums.

Fortunately, silver fillings can safely be replaced with tooth-colored restorations.

Advantages of Tooth-Colored Restorations

White Fillings and Restorations

There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations (white fillings). Resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger.

Because the resin used in tooth-colored restorations contain fluoride this can help prevent decay. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums!

The result is a beautiful smile!

Replacing Silver Fillings with a Tooth Colored Restoration

You can have your silver fillings replaced with white fillings, which are tooth-colored restorations (onlays). This process requires two appointments.

Your First Appointment:

  1. The old filling is removed along with any additional decay.
  2. An impression is made of your teeth. A model of your teeth is made and sent to the lab.
  3. A temporary onlay is placed on the tooth.

At the Lab: A resin is carefully placed into the model of your teeth. It is then designed to look natural.

Your Second Appointment:

  1. The temporary onlay is removed.
  2. A conditioning gel is placed on your tooth to prepare it for the new onlay.
  3. Bonding cement is placed on the tooth and a high intensity light bonds the resin to the tooth.
  4. The tooth is then polished.

Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger and the tooth is protected!

I recommend Titus Dental to all of my friends and family. Dr. Gary repaired three of my front teeth that had been chipped over the years. His work is so precise that there is no way to tell it isn't my natural tooth. Dr. Debbie is calming and encouraging during new patient exams. Carol, the hygienist, sets the standard for gentle cleanings. They have earned my trust and respect and I won't go anywhere else.

I had avoided going to the dentist for more years than I want to admit out of fear of being chastised by the dentist or hygienist and my general anxiety about the pain from any dental procedures I might need. Also, to be honest, I was afraid that I a dentist might take advantage of my procrastination and end up telling me that I needed a lot of potentially unnecessary procedures, driving the cost through the roof. But I was amazed at the kindness, attentiveness, gentleness, and ethics of the Titus Dental team. From the minute I walked in the door, I felt like this was a practice that I could trust. I felt genuinely welcomed and my anxiety was treated respectfully. The assessment of my dental needs (xrays and preliminary exam) was gentle and I was never shamed by any of the staff for my lapse in dental care. The care plan that the team developed was realistic, and they worked with me to develop a schedule that honored my finances and time committments. My teeth cleaning was the best experience of the kind that I have ever had. The hygienist was so gentle and explained every step of what she was doing and why in straight-forward, easy-to-understand language. She almost made me excited to floss (but let's not go too crazy)! Dr. Gary removed old "silver" fillings, replaced them with new white ones, and took care of a new cavity that had developed. He was very attentive to my comfort and anxiety, taking time before he began to work on me to understand what I feared the most and explain how he was going to numb me for the procedure in such a comforting way that I had complete trust in him before we even began. At one point in the procedure when my jaw was cramping, he called in Priscilla, the in-house massage professional, and asked her to work on my jaw muscles so that we didn't have to make the procedure more drawn-out. She was able to alleviate the cramping and help my anxiety levels to drop to the point where I almost fell asleep in the chair. Imagine that response from someone so afraid of dentists! I can't say enough great things about this team. They are a rare gem!

the dentists, receptionist, hygenist, and rest of staff were so warm and friendly, Each one took the time to get to know me and my daughter. Conversation throughout felt like family. Priscilla is a massage therapist and has a massage chair right in the office. She offered both my daughter and me complimentary massages after our appointments! Amazing! So happy to finally find a new dentist that I will stick with!
